Wahiba and her three kids in Istanbul, January 2017, three years after fleeing their home in Syria.
When bombs and snipers first entered their peaceful town, Wahiba fled with her children for Turkey. Her husband Muhammed remained attempting to earn money for his sister’s family. Fear of being arrested or forced to join a military spurred his move to Turkey more recently to rejoin his family.
Both Wahiba and Muhammed suffer from tuberculosis and are both on medication, while Muhamed lives with a back injury and thyroid issues. Due to the pain in his back he can’t engage in intense work, and is currently employed in a supermarket. Wahiba is unemployed due to her health problems and to stay with the children at home.
Wahiba’s top priorities include food, medicine and education for the kids.
