Suha (17) and her brother Waseem (13) pictured in their shelter in Lebanon, February, 2017. Their mother Shadia: “We were living in Lattakia, Syria when the revolution broke out. My husband’s brother was living in the city and was killed by a missile as he was walking. Airplanes hit our neighborhood frequently at the time, too. We were afraid we would meet the same fate as my brother-in-law if we stayed any longer so we decided to flee.”
After staying two months at a refugee camp inside the border of Turkey, they continued on to Lebanon in hopes of finding a better situation. The family did find a place to stay in a basement though they note it is dark, humid and wet. Neither parents have found work and worry they’ll soon be unable to afford their rent, school tuition and the basic needs of their family.
