Rafah and Mustafa fled their home in Syria in early 2016. After a horrifying journey by foot between Syria and Turkey, they continued on, eventually to Greece. Now awaiting reunification with her husband in Germany, Rafah and her son have been living in a squat with three other families and nowhere else to go.
“We traveled to many different camps but they always told us they couldn’t accept me and my son. There are many problems in the squats – they are not safe. There are drugs, alcohol and fights…There’s not always food, and it’s not a positive environment for my three-year-old son. The place where we live is also very dirty. There is water constantly on the floor from the toilets, and that is the place where they wash the big pots for food. I am afraid my son will get chickenpox here, scabies, fleas. I am also afraid of hepatitis.”
Rafah would like to get Mustafa out of the squat and into a clean home as soon as possible.
