My husband left to Germany before us and as we haven’t been able to reunify, my two children and I fled Syria with a smuggler. We spent five days in the forests between Syria and Turkey unprepared as the smugglers lied to us and told us it would be very easy. The weather was cold, it was rainy and very muddy. My children couldnt walk and they have to be carried by me, their aunts or some of the random men with us in the group. We were slipping and falling and eventually all of us lost our shoes in the mud and our clothes stayed wet. We then crossed Turkey relatively quickly, traveling together with my cousins and their children in one small car. After we made it across to Lesvos, we continued to Athens and up north to Thessaloniki where the border was already closed. We then remained in the Idomeni camp until it was closed down for poor living conditions. After that we traveled back to Athens in search of safe accommodation….We are living in central Athens now [in a squat] and most of the time there is food provided by independent volunteers, but it is not always the case. I have to buy a lot of food by myself when no coupons/cash cards are provided. The entire building has only one shower for men one for women. Toilets are only downstairs which is a big problem because of my sons problems with his bladder and his inability to walk. My son broke his leg when he slipped on the stairs because of the water that is coming from the toilet nearby.

Beth, Jess, and Nick
Three of us are sharing hosting this family: Beth is a baker, copyeditor, and parent who is co-hosting this campaign as one mother to another. Jess, a registered dietitian, and Nick, a PhD student studying astronomy, are co-parents. They are co-hosting this campaign with Beth because they believe that every adult and child has the right to a safe and clean space to live.
$4046 Goal

Please give what you can, whether is $5, $250, or anything in between, to help this family get safe housing. Natalia and her two children are Syrian refugees living in Athens. They are in communal housing with only one bathroom for the whole building, and Natalia’s son has physical problems that make this challenging.

Natalia carried her two children for weeks through rain and bad weather to get them to a safe place. We want to help make that happen. Any amount you can give goes directly to Natalia’s costs of living to get her in safe housing so she can start re-building her life and take care of her family.

At least four quarterly emails will be sent to all contributors with status and progress reports related to activity on the campaign. This may include information about the successful transfer of funds to a hospital, a photo of the recipient after a successful surgery, etc.

Contributors will be provided with a local address to send food, clothes, school supplies and letters of support directly to the family’s door. This is a great way to build one-to-one relationships and potentially provide more needed support down the road. Plus, everything included in the $5 reward.

Attend a live video chat session with the host and refugee. Introduce yourself and time-permitting, spark up a conversation along with others involved in the campaign. A translator will be provided for English when needed. Plus, everything included in the $5 and $15 rewards.

Engage in a 30 minute one-to-one live video chat. An arabic translator will be provided for French or English. Plus, everything included in the $5, $15 and $25 rewards.

Everything in the $45 reward, four times! You can give them away to others or enjoy them all yourself. Each of the four rewards comes with everything offered in the $45 reward and below.

Thinking of traveling? Humanwire can help with recommendations for your itinerary. This could be a great opportunity to meet and connect more closely with the refugee family that will be benefitting from your contribution. For dinner, Humanwire will provide local transportation for everyone. Also, everything included in all prior rewards.
