FAMILY 4 - IMG_4558

Lamia Al Jassen (49, back left) is seen here with her children and sister. Since they fled bombings all around them in Jabal Semaan, Syria over two years ago, the kids have not heard from their father. Dolal (pictured in yellow stripes) is the only member of the family who has been able to find work, occasionally bringing in $4/day for harvesting potatoes and onions.

Though Lamia wishes she could afford education for her children, top on her list for her family are beds and blankets, wood to keep warm through the winter, rent payment for their shelter which is currently $600/year and a visit to the doctor for her daughter Sanna (not pictured) who has a problem with her right eye and for herself, due to the severe pain in her legs. She added: “Enough food to stay alive”.

Raised in Maine and truly appreciative of our beautiful State, I love my family and I am deeply committed to our community. Trying to be resourceful and efficient with my time as it pertains to creating a healthy environment for my kids is my greatest challenge, coupled with struggling to relax in a stressful society of worry. I aspire to slow down and enjoy life to the fullest while continuously learning and contributing to the greater good.
Candy (KC) resides with his wife and kids in central Maine. He enjoys playing music at home with his daughters as well as in a metal band with other dudes.
$4500 Goal

In recent weeks, many of my friends have expressed the sentiment that their homes would be open to welcome Syrian refugees, were they to arrive in Maine. Feeling this same way and compelled to help in a more immediate fashion, I was pleased to find Lamia here on Humanwire, although it was very difficult to choose a family in need.

I chose Lamia primarily because I wish to give hope to her daughters, who I imagine have already become strong and aged beyond their years. The courage and determination of the Syrian people is heartbreaking and inspiring.

As the parents of two young children living in a small New England town, we aim to give my daughters the power to help the world, by cultivating the necessary tools, including but not limited to, empathy, compassion, and responsibility. As a family, our modus operandi is to think globally and act locally, but the Syrian humanitarian crisis has presented what I felt was a need to act on a larger scale.

I hope you will consider making a contribution here. I have made approximate guesses about the costs for Lamia’s necessities, but I know that all funds will go towards helping this family to be safe and comfortable in their endeavors to move forward with life beyond war and great loss.

Thank you.

At least four quarterly emails will be sent to all contributors with status and progress reports related to activity on the campaign. This may include information about the successful transfer of funds to a hospital, a photo of the recipient after a successful surgery, etc.

Contributors will be provided with a local address to send food, clothes, school supplies and letters of support directly to the family’s door. This is a great way to build one-to-one relationships and potentially provide more needed support down the road. Plus, everything included in the $5 reward.

Attend a live video chat session with the host and refugee. Introduce yourself and time-permitting, spark up a conversation along with others involved in the campaign. A translator will be provided for English when needed. Plus, everything included in the $5 and $15 rewards.

Engage in a 30 minute one-to-one live video chat. An arabic translator will be provided for French or English. Plus, everything included in the $5, $15 and $25 rewards.

Everything in the $45 reward, four times! You can give them away to others or enjoy them all yourself. Each of the four rewards comes with everything offered in the $45 reward and below.

Thinking of traveling? Humanwire can help with recommendations for your itinerary. This could be a great opportunity to meet and connect more closely with the refugee family that will be benefitting from your contribution. For dinner, Humanwire will provide local transportation for everyone. Also, everything included in all prior rewards.
