Lamia Al Jassen (49, back left) is seen here with her children and sister. Since they fled bombings all around them in Jabal Semaan, Syria over two years ago, the kids have not heard from their father. Dolal (pictured in yellow stripes) is the only member of the family who has been able to find work, occasionally bringing in $4/day for harvesting potatoes and onions.
Though Lamia wishes she could afford education for her children, top on her list for her family are beds and blankets, wood to keep warm through the winter, rent payment for their shelter which is currently $600/year and a visit to the doctor for her daughter Sanna (not pictured) who has a problem with her right eye and for herself, due to the severe pain in her legs. She added: “Enough food to stay alive”.
