Jinan

Jinan

Why did you flee your home?
“There was an airplane in the sky starting to bomb our town. We left suddenly and traveled to Turkey. When we returned to Syria a year later we found our house in ruins. We traveled back to Turkey and lived in Hatay but life was hard there so we moved to Istanbul in 2013.”

What are your top three greatest needs?
“University Tuition – approximately 6000 Lira ($2000 USD)”.

What are your other needs?
“Just university.”

If you were suddenly given a large sum of money, how would you spend it?
“I would start a project to help Syrian children go to school. Many are missing education and should be learning. 50% of students here don’t have schools and can’t go to school.”

If it becomes safe to return, will you have a place to go? What will you do?
“Yes, we will rebuild our house and live there. We have relatives who are in Turkey with us and we want to go to rebuild. This is why the university is so important. I want to be a part of building Syria’s new future.”

Joanna Birkner
Host
I am a recent college graduate living in Istanbul. I work at an NGO and also teach English in my spare time.
$2000 Goal

Istanbul houses more refugees than the rest of Europe combined. Living in this city is a daily reminder of the challenges refugees face and the privileges afforded to me by growing up in the United States.

I am a proud Bryn Mawr graduate and attending a women’s college ignited my passion for global women’s education and equality. Jinan’s story resonated with me for this reason.

Everyone deserves a shot at an education, and it is my hope that together, we can help send Jinan to university.
