The only thing I want to do is take care of my mother and father. They are being threatened. I want to make a better life for my family and for my society. My mother’s biggest wish is that I get married. I’m not ready to get married yet, but I want to fulfill my mother’s dream. I hope to get my life under control so that I can start a family of my own.”
Javid (22) was born in Afghanistan. He was just a child when he started to learn the horrible realities of war. At a young age, extremists killed his older brother and his family faced many threats throughout his childhood. Javid’s family was poor and he never had the opportunity to go to school, as he needed to work to help support his family.
When he was older, extremists tried to convince him to join their ranks. Scared for his life, his parents helped him to escape to Turkey, but his journey to a better life wasn’t easy. The smugglers transporting Javid put him and others in dangerous situations that made him question if he would ever make it. After weeks of car rides, days of walking and horrible conditions, he arrived in Istanbul.
Living in Turkey has been difficult for Javid. He worked at a factory for three months before leaving the job behind because the factory owner never paid him. Now Javid pulls a heavy cart and collects recyclables for 12 to 14 hours each day, earning a mere $5 for his efforts.
Even though Javid is young, the backbreaking work has wreaked havoc on his health. He recently fell while pulling the cart and injured his back, which now causes pain in his legs as well. Javid needs money to afford treatment for his injured back and rest to heal his body. But he can’t stop working as he has to pay his rent, purchase basic necessities, and pay back the smugglers who aided in his escape.

I am a recent college graduate living in Istanbul. I work at a newspaper and volunteer with refugees in my spare time.
$1200 Goal

Istanbul houses more refugees than the rest of Europe combined. Living in this city is a daily reminder of the challenges refugees face and the privileges afforded to me by growing up in the United States.

I know Javid through a friend, he is a good person with a kind heart. Let’s work together to give him a chance to get out of the junkyard and treat his medical problems.

At least four quarterly emails will be sent to all contributors with status and progress reports related to activity on the campaign. This may include information about the successful transfer of funds to a hospital, a photo of the recipient after a successful surgery, etc.

Contributors will be provided with a local address to send food, clothes, school supplies and letters of support directly to the family’s door. This is a great way to build one-to-one relationships and potentially provide more needed support down the road. Plus, everything included in the $5 reward.
