Amale (6) before her shelter in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon, 2017.
Amale, her younger brother and parents were living in a small town east of Damascus when militants entered and began attacking. The family moved to another town further north for two months until they were exposed to further violence. Amale’s father Omran was wounded in a bombing, and the family lost their daughter to dehydration while fleeing.
Omran worked in a textile factory in Syria but is currently unable to work legally in Lebanon. He said he would like to return to get back to work once it is possible. Amale does not currently go to school but loves to learn – she also likes to play with friends and her brother, Mohammad. Mohammad does not go to school either, but enjoys spending time with his family.
