Fatima and her five children fled war torn Syria in 2014 after a bomb landed on the roof of their building. This is a photo of three of Fatima’s children: Abdulrahman, Besher and Jad.
Fatima’s most pressing concern is the health of Abdulrahman, the eldest, who suffers from epilepsy as a result of a blood clot in his brain. He has seizures regularly and was prescribed cost prohibitive medication to help combat this. In addition, Fatima has been unable to secure any vaccinations for Jad, her youngest, as local clinics tend to turn away Syrian refugees.
The children not present were working instead of attending school in order to help their family get by. They work in a sewing factory and barbershop. Her husband found work as a chicken distributor. Fatima said she dreams of going back home to Syria, if she could be so lucky, but can’t imagine it ever being safe for her children.
